The great thing about Player of the Match awards is that they don't have to be about scoring the most points or goals. Knowing that their hard work could earn a trophy can provide an extra boost of motivation on match day.
Coaches can use them to recognise effort, leadership, sportsmanship, improvement or an exceptional contribution to the team. This can be particularly valuable in junior sport, where recognising different qualities helps encourage every player to get involved and continue developing.
